STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:


MUSICAL FANZINE RECORDS is an INDEPENDENT/DO-IT-YRSELF/DO-IT-TOGETHER record label based out of Providence, Rhode Island. Like many autonomously-minded punk rock labels before us, our objective is multi-faceted: to release music that we like, and to build community via thoughtful engagement with the creative work of our friends and comrades.

We believe in the subversive, worldview-changing power of independent pop music and zines, as well as the importance of building solidarity through local and international underground art scenes that we as cultural participants have the duty to create and sustain.

We also simply love music and ephemera.

Still, we aim to get to know bands through more than just their music, and we aim to learn from and grow alongside those in/outside of our community creatively and politically.

We are for self-determination and mass participation, and we are against mindless consumption of culture and the insidious infiltration of capitalist logic into our communities. We still believe artists should be paid (as all working people should be compensated fairly), but not at the expense of their ethics. It is for this reason, among many others, we are focused on principle over profit.

None of these ideas are particularly original, but might need to be made clear due to the dismal climate of (un)popular music today.

We do not seek to re-create or idealize the past, but we do study it in order to learn from the contributions of those who came before us. Many of those who inspired us are still making incredible things, and deserve our recognition and support. Many of those who will inspire us in the future are just getting started and deserve space and encouragement to grow. It is for these reasons, among many others, that we wholeheartedly believe in the continued relevance of all-ages spaces, and inter-generational collaboration.

We also just enjoy making records.
